Scandic Hotels Introduces IDeaS G3 RMS Across its Estate of European Hotels

IDeaS Revenue Solutions just announced that it has expanded its long-standing partnership with Scandic Hotels with the planned implementation of IDeaS flagship G3 Revenue Management System (IDeaS G3 RMS) across its estate of more than 200 properties, according to a freshly issued press release.

IDeaS’ technology will help Scandic futurecast demand for more than 40,000 rooms across seven European countries, creating tangible business results with advanced revenue management tools and expert resources.

HSMAI Region Europe Roadshow

HSMAI Region Europe would like to invite you to join us for an evening of trends, innovation and networking. The Roadshow is an afternoon event followed by networking and drinks. Its FREE to attend for both HSMAI members and non members if you are working in the hotel and travel industry. Sign up today!

New HSMAI initiative for the service apartments segment

By request from one of our close Norwegian partners, the Frogner House Apartments in Oslo, HSMAI Region Europe held the first gathering for active parties in the service apartment sector on Thursday, also in the Norwegian capital.

This will be a whole new field of operation for HSMAI, aiming at establishing a forum for those working with these topics, and facilitating extended cooperation between them.

We are looking forward to sharing experiences and, possibly, set up a European Advisory Board.

The idea is that regular meetings will be hosted by the participating parties in turn, with the first meeting held at the Frogner House Apartments premises in Oslo.

In this particular field there’s much inspiration to be found in London.

We start up with baby steps, in Norway, but this is a subject with pan-European potentials.

The Thursday meeting gathered participants from Frogner House Apartments, Bjørvika Apartments, Oslo Apartments, Saga Hotels and Thon Hotel Slottsparken, as well as the following speakers from HSMAI’s close partners, Infor and OTA Insight:

The meeting quickly concluded that there’s a need for an arena for serviced apartments, and that this is a good initiative. This marked segment has matured considerably over the last years, so the timing seems optimal.

We are looking forward to start working with this, in the hope that you’ll give us a word if you’d like to involve yourself.

Europe’s Top 20 Extraordinary Contributors to the Industry in Sales, Marketing and Revenue Management were named during HSMAI Region Europe’s awards ceremony in Amsterdam on Wednesday 29 March 2017, in which Best in Class winners were also named in several categories.

The winner of this award has a clear focus on social media and it shows! Their Social Wall on their website not only indicates the social media activity of the brand itself, but also that of the users and guests in their hotels. Their equaliser on the website for example shows the users what’s happening in their properties at that very moment by combining factors such as occupancy, users on property page of the website, social activity etc.
The way the video of the grand opening of their Amsterdam property was integrated into a branded player, placed on travel, music and lifestyle blogs, and published on all of their Social channels and promoted on Facebook (with a dedicated budget) resulted that this video by itself has now been viewed over 125,000 times on YouTube and other channels.
It’s obvious that the winner of this year’s Best Brand Experience in Year 2016: Social Media – GOLD Award is on a very succesfull Social Media journey reaching an impressive and fast growing brand awareness. Therefore the winner is Jaz Hotel GmbH.

Exceptional Product/Service Launch of Year 2016

Introducing new travel products to the general public, as well as showcasing their own properties, had been a strong focus for the last 5 years for this company. To achieve that dream, this year’s winners needed to find a new

  • thinking strategy
  • technology focus
  • and supplier feeds

And they did! Working to a tight deadline, they built the website look and feel, including all content and copy to reflect their ethos within 6 months. And not just that! The 3 platforms they created completed over 500 orders with £ 350,000,- in revenue in just a couple of months.

And the future looks bright, too! In January 2017, this year’s winner officially went live to the world both online and mobile compatible. In the first 24 hours the website received over 5000 hits. And to date: With 0 marketing, and 0 spending behind this project so far, they have generated just under another £350,000.

It’s because of this that the Exceptional Product/Service Launch of Year 2016 GOLD award goes to Diamond Resorts International.

The winner of this award aims to establish an innovative, holistic sustainable hospitality concept that makes it easier for migrants (often refugees) to organise a self-supported, independent life in the Netherlands.
They have two goals:

To create a place for migrants within an existing community where they can work, stay and create with people that share similar values. In other words: an environment where ‘Newcomers’ and the existing society are there to help eachother.
To prove that social causes and economically sustainable business concepts can go together.

The concepts they designed together with various partners (including The Hotel school of the Hague) are centred around the vision that ‘One’s hospitality reflects one’s culture’ These concepts have the active support of the Dutch Prime Minister.
It’s because of this that the Gold Award for Best Social Responsibility Initiative of Year 2016 goes to Pitztop

Outstanding Achievement in Year 2016 in Revenue Management

Gold: AccorHotels Germany GmbH

The jury says:

The winner in this category realised that most us by now have easily access to all rooms related data, have meaningful analysis and KPI’s to analyse our room performance, are experts in RM for rooms, BUT what about MICE?

And thus decided to go forward and decided to THINK TOTAL!

So they built an impressive and innovative Mice Tracker that provides access to all relevant function space data and creates significant KPI’s and dashboards for analysing their function space performance.

In addition to this they developed a user-friendly tool with automatic daily data transfer of their function space performance and trained their Revenue Managers extensively in order to successfully analyse and optimise their function space revenues. Altogether a textbook example to the jury of how to create and implement a well-designed innovative product. And that is why the Outstanding Achievement 2016 in Revenue Management GOLD Award goes to AccorHotels Germany GmbH.

The winner in this category became the first hotel chain in Germany to introduce mobile check-ins using the prizeotel app for iOS and Android, thereby offering guests an all-in-one solution. Thanks to its integrated concept, the app is unrivalled by similar products on the market. What makes it unique is it’s 2-way interface between the app and the hotel system, door locking system and payment processor.

In other words: the guests use their smartphone to open their room and call the lift via a simple Bluetooth connection. All this of course conform the latest safety standards (including transmition by encrypted data), but still able to provide information, such as credit card details and door lock activation.

By 2016, more than 6000 downloads had been confirmed and the average number of monthly bookings made using the app is more than 500 for all three hotels.

It’s because of this that the Gold Customer Service Award goes to Prize Holding GmbH.

Gold: Nordic Choice Hotels

The jury says:

The owner, CEO and several of the top management in this hotel chain travel in their area for one month, in an effort to meet as many employees as possible.

While – and by doing so – they create a meeting place where both management and staff can listen, learn, inspire and be inspired at the same time. And this includes all(!) staff, as they realise that, due to the growth of their company, the distance between the decision makers and the hotels getx bigger. Therefore they make it a priority to personally meet the people who greet their guests every day – such as housekeeping, reception, breakfast staff, janitors and so forth – and tell them how important their efforts are.

In addition to this they make sure that they meet witht heir local suppliers and have press meetings in every destination.

Because of all this and the combination of Staff, Suppliers & Press in one laser focused event (making it not only efficient, but also very effective)the jury recognises the Nordic Choice Hotels with the Gold Award for Company culture.

The jury finds the NCT concept of Nordic Choice Hotels so strong and all-encompassing that it also awarded the Nordic Choice Hotels with the 2016 Gold Award for Communication.

IDeaS executive to chair HSMAI Region Europe’s Revenue Management Advisory Board

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands — HSMAI Region Europe and IDeaS are proud to announce that Paul van Meerendonk, IDeaS’ Director of Advisory Services, is now the new chairman of the Revenue Management Advisory Board at one of the most important associations within the hospitality industry, HSMAI Region Europe. The announcement was made at the HSMAI Revenue Optimization Conference in Amsterdam on Wednesday 29 March. A second generation industry veteran — his father worked in hotels sales and general management — Paul brings nearly 20 years of revenue management experience to the position.

The appointment comes in the wake of news that citizenM Hotels Commercial Director Lennert De Jong steps down as the Advisory Board’s chair. Mr. De Jong will, however, remain a valued member of the board.

“I have hospitality in my veins and an inherent passion for revenue management and the industry that I want to share with as many people as possible,” Paul van Meerendonk says. “As a one of the founding members of the Advisory Board, I want to continue the great work HSMAI has done in growing and developing the revenue management culture of the hospitality industry in Europe.”

“We are deeply grateful for Lennert’s contributions thus far, confident that his commitment remains unwavering, as he now steps down as an ordinary member of the advisory board,” says HSMAI Region Europe’s President and CEO Ingunn Hofseth, happy to determine that the board stays in good hands under its new chair, Paul van Meerendonk, adding “Paul has been a tremendous support during his service as the vice chair, so we’re really looking forward to working with him in this field of operation.”

“I would like to thank Lennert for a job very well done, happy to establish that he will continue his work, although not as chair of the board, always bringing positive energy to every meeting and call, coupled with a deep passion for the industry,” Ms. Hofseth declares in a statement.

“Paul van Meerendonk has done a great job for us these past three years. He is highly motivated and has many good ideas. We primarily work with people from the industry as volunteer chairs. Paul is very structured and well organised, as well as very good at separating IDeaS from the job he has done for us,” she adds.

“As vice chair and one of the founding members of the HSMAI Region Europe RM Advisory Board, I have been part of the driving force behind creating the momentum and growth of the board. Working closely together with the previous chairs, Christian Boerger and Lennert de Jong, as well as the HSMAI leadership team, we recruited members from Europe who shared our interest in hotels, Revenue Management and the growth of the industry as a whole. I’m looking forward to continuing this work in my new capacity,” says Paul van Meerendonk, Director Global Advisory Services at IDeaS, a SAS Company.

He leads a global team of revenue management and pricing experts who are focused on hospitality revenue optimisation projects. During his time with IDeaS, Paul has successfully led several high-profile advisory projects, including estate revenue management audits and roadmap development, function space revenue management, price optimisation, revenue management service desk development, education and training development, and standard operating procedure development.

Paul holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Commercial Economics from the Amsterdam School of Business, and is a certified Six Sigma Greenbelt. He is an active participant in a number of revenue management related associations, including currently holding the Vice-Chairman position with the HSMAI Region Europe RM Advisory Board. He is a frequent guest speaker at numerous industry events and conventions, and regularly conducts global webinars on Revenue Management and Pricing topics.

Prior to joining IDeaS, Paul was Asset Manager with Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels, working on various assignments in the UK and Europe, on behalf of investors, banks and financial intuitions. Paul’s work was aimed at ensuring property performance and return on investment through interaction with and auditing of hotel management.

Paul van Meerendonk started his hotel career with Starwood Hotels and Resorts, where he was active in Sales & Marketing and Revenue Management roles at a hotel, regional and corporate level in Brussels, Munich and Bangkok. He was a key member of the team that rolled out and developed Revenue Management within Europe and the Middle East, for Starwood Hotels, and co-designed an industry first on-line revenue management planning and reporting tool. Text continues below photograph.

Representing Diamond Resorts International, Steven Dow will step up from a member of the Revenue Management Advisory Board, where he has served over two years, to a new role as Vice Chairman of the Board for Revenue Management for HSMAI Europe. With a career spanning 20 years in hospitality, Steven possesses a real passion for continuous improvement in business, including a core focus and drive for youth development within our industry.

“To be given this opportunity makes me immensely proud and I will continue to be fully committed to the industry and the objectives of HSMAI across the European region, adding a valuable contribution wherever possible, thank you for the opportunity,” he says. Steven has led and grown his European team to approximately 70 team members in a multi-disciplined environment that started with just one team member 10 years ago. Today the newly created hotel business realises revenues of USD 30 million for Diamond Resorts International, who globally has a network of more than 420 worldwide vacation destinations in 35 countries throughout the continental United States, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, South America, Central America, Europe, Asia, Australasia and Africa.

Margitte Verkruijsse-Reiner joins HSMAI Region Europe team

HSMAI Region Europe have hired Margitte Verkruijsse-Reiner part time until mid-June, to coordinate and finalise the content for the Digital Expert programme for HSMAI Region Europe.

Her last job was at SnapShot, where she worked with business development related to educating customers of all sizes, on data, analytics and demand management. Her attention for detail, great sense of humour and dogged perseverance resulted in a large number of European independent hotels, groups, but also global brands, being introduced to the SnapShot Analytics and Demand Management applications. Before joining SnapShot she was the Sales director for Sabre in Europe.

“Margitte has been an active HSMAI member in both her previous jobs, and is very familiar with our organisation. Hotelchamp entering into HSMAI Region Europe partnership

Hotelchamp recently signed an agreement to venture into a partnership with HSMAI Region Europe. The company will be joining HSMAI for several events, starting with the HSMAI ROC and DOC in Amsterdam on 29 March.

Q: What does a day at work consist of for you?

A: I don’t have a typical day. Some days I’m on the road meeting clients and prospects, some days I’m at events meeting interesting people and giving presentations, and other days I’m in the office or working from home. Variety is the spice of life and my job has plenty of that.

Q: What’s the best part of your job?

A: The hospitality industry is full of vibrant and interesting people and I am extremely grateful that my job has given the opportunity to meet so many of them from all over the globe.

Q: Do you have anyone you’ve looked up to?

A: Nelson Mandela. I grew up in apartheid South Africa and the humility and forgiveness he showed to ensure a peaceful transition to democracy is unrivalled and a lesson to everyone.

Q: Do you have any nice traditions at your office?

A: Our London office is just over two year’s old so no traditions as such, but Duetto has a fantastic culture. We don’t think work means sitting at a desk all day. We enjoy flexible hours, working from home when necessary and a healthy dose of fun team stuff. Sometimes the best ideas are born over beers in the pub.

Q: How long have you been a member of HSMAI?

A: 2 years.

Q: What do you think is the best thing about HSMAI?

A: Creating an identity for the digital marketing and revenue management community. Our industry is very fragmented and HSMAI allows professionals working in these disciplines to galvanise best practices and increase the relevance of these functions within hotel operations.

Q: Are there any activities or projects you think HSMAI should start up?

A: I would like HSMAI to grow its membership by being more prominent in supporting digital marketing and revenue management professionals week by  week, and not just hosting the big events and providing the CRME certification.

Q: Describe your perfect weekend.

A: A weekend in the countryside away from mod cons doing fun outdoor activities with my family. Having grown up in Africa the love of nature runs deep in my veins.

Q: If you were trapped on a desert island, what would you take with you, if you could choose one thing?

A: Being a practical person I’d say a Bear Grylls survival guide or a Swiss army knife.

Q: What is the title of the book about your life?

A: Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think!

Q: What is your next travel destination?

A: Cyprus for the Easter holidays.

Q: Do you have any special hobbies?

A: I still play 5-a-side football every week and occasionally I get a round of golf in when my busy schedule allows.
